Facts About Cancer

• This year about 562,340 Americans are expected to die of cancer—more than 1,500 people a day.
• Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States.
• In the United States, 1 in 4 deaths is from cancer.
• Men have an approximate lifetime risk of less than 1 in 2 of developing cancer; for women, the lifetime risk is approximately a little more than 1 in 3.
• This year about 1,479,350 new cancer cases will be diagnosed nationwide; 8,880 will be in Utah.
• The overall estimated cost of cancer for 2008 (the last year statistics are available) is $228.1 billion.
• Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women.
• The greatest risk factor for cancer is age, with 77 percent of all cancers diagnosed at age 55 and older.
• Although rare in children, cancer is the second leading cause of death by disease in children between ages 0 and 14.
• One-third of U.S. cancer deaths are related to overweight or obesity, physical inactivity, and nutrition.
