Contributions to Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) go beyond monetary
gifts; many compassionate and dedicated individuals donate their
time as volunteers—an integral part of the HCI team. Volunteers
perform a variety of functions, including assisting patients and
their loved ones, helping visitors in the Cancer Learning Center,
and aiding with fundraisers and special events.
After retiring from Westminster College in 2000 at
the age of 75, Barbara Fricke—a mother of four, grandmother
of two, and great-grandmother of two—began dedicating her
time to HCI, giving more than 1,860 hours of service so far. “Barbara’s
service to our institution is invaluable. Her smile, attitude, and
dedication are greatly appreciated. She is the epitome of what a
great volunteer and person should be,” says Geoff Erickson,
manager of HCI volunteer services.

On July 27, 2005, Fricke received the Daily Point
of Light award recognizing outstanding volunteer service. Granted
by the national Points of Light Foundation, the award honors commitment,
hard work, and outstanding volunteer service. The Washington D.C.-
based foundation hopes volunteering will become a way of life for
every citizen, and that people will believe volunteering isn’t
just nice to do, but necessary. “
The true Points of Light are our wonderful patients
who continue to smile while coping with the burden of cancer,”
Fricke says. “What a privilege to serve them.”
