Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, accounting for nearly half of all forms of the disease diagnosed in the United States.
There are three main types of skin cancer: melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the most common cancers of the skin. When detected early, they have a cure rate of 95%.
Melanoma grows and spreads faster than other skin cancers. Melanomas usually begin in a mole or other pigmented area of the skin. A less common form, called intraocular melanoma, can develop in the eye.
You can take action to reduce your risk of skin cancer and to detect it at an early stage. Please see the resources listed below to learn more about the prevention, early detection, and treatment of skin cancer. Please also visit our Skin Cancer Screening Clinic or call (801) 581-2955 to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist at Huntsman Cancer Institute.
