Huntsman Cancer Institute seeks compassionate, caring, and understanding volunteers to assist staff, patients, and patients' families. Volunteers need to be discreet in their interactions with patients and respect patients' privacy. They need to be reliable, committed to volunteer service, and available on a regular basis. We ask that volunteers in ongoing positions work at least one four-hour shift weekly for a minimum of six months. We encourage cancer survivors and their family members to apply. However, the cancer survivor must be out of treatment for one year before they or their family members are eligible for a volunteer position.
How to Volunteer
- Complete an application and two reference forms
- Interview with the volunteer coordinator
- Volunteer at least one four-hour shift each week
- Volunteer for a minimum of six months
- Receive a satisfactory criminal background check
- Complete two TB skin tests
- Provide proof of immunity to measles, mumps, rubella, and chicken pox
- Sign a confidentiality agreement
- Complete an online training focused on patient privacy policies, hospital safety, and infection control guidelines
A completed application form, two letters of reference, a personal interview, and attendance at an orientation meeting are required for all volunteer positions, except some fundraising and auxiliary positions. Volunteers must sign a confidentiality agreement, receive a satisfactory result on a criminal background check, and have an annual tuberculosis screening, which is provided by HCI.
Volunteers receive required training after placement in a position. Placement is based on the volunteer's availability, time commitment, and interest. Volunteers may be cross-trained to work in a variety of positions.
At the orientation meeting, volunteers receive information about confidentiality, health, and safety issues. During orientation, volunteers sign a confidentiality agreement. HCI volunteer uniforms and name badges are provided free of charge.
