Huntsman Cancer Institute Clinical Trials

The team consists of the following members:

  • The patient
  • A research doctor or principal investigator (PI)
  • A research pharmacist
  • A research nurse
  • A clinical research coordinator

A research doctor or principal investigator (PI) is dedicated to finding the cure and new treatment for cancer by participating in clinical research studies.

A research pharmacist ensures procedures are followed for the control of medications used in clinical research. They order, store, and dispense research medications. They also provide information to the patient about trial medications, and oversee patient compliance. Huntsman Cancer Institute's (HCI) Investigational Drug Service has been established to provide a safe, effective, and efficient means of delivering medications used in clinical research.

A research nurse works with the patient, the research team, and other nurses at the hospital or clinic. They counsel, educate, support, and manage patient care on clinical studies. They also manage treatment-related side effects, quality-of-life issues, and symptom management before, during, and after treatment.

A clinical research coordinator helps patients understand the research study they are considering. They assist investigators in patient enrollment, study compliance, and data management. The research coordinator oversees patient participation in a clinical trial and is a good contact for patients who have questions.

He or she will help with the following:

  • Teach patients about participation in the clinical trial
  • Make sure the protocol instructions are followed
  • Work with the principal investigator (PI) to continually educate patients
  • Help manage clinical trial data

HCI’s clinical research coordinators are all members of the national Society of Clinical Research Associates (SoCRA) and participate in continuing educational opportunities.

“I thanked the doctor for saving my life. I really think he did and my son keeps saying, ‘Mom, you’ve got so many more years.’ You just can’t believe how you get treated here. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
-Bonnie, pancreas cancer survivor
