Mission Statement
To provide compassionate, comprehensive, state of the
art, interdisciplinary care of patients of all ages
afflicted with benign and malignant tumors of soft tissue
and bone.
To understand the molecular origins of soft tissue and
bone tumors through basic science research.
To develop new diagnostic criteria & treatments
based upon these investigations thereby improving cure
rates and overall outcome in patients afflicted with
these conditions.
To develop translational and clinical investigations
to address and improve the outcome of patients suffering
from sarcomas with particular attention focusing on
patients at high risk for local and distant relapse.
Program Overview
HCI Sarcoma Service is a interdisciplinary team of
clinicians and researchers with expertise in diagnosis
and treatment of soft tissue and bone tumors in patients
of all ages.
To optimize the diagnosis and treatment of patients
with soft tissue and bone tumors, HCI has specialty
sarcoma clinics located at Huntsman Cancer Institute and
Primary Children's Medical Center. The purpose of these
clinics is to provide an environment where physicians
from multiple disciplines can come together to formulate
an optimal treatment regimen for a given patient. Adults
are seen at HCI, while children are seen at Primary
Children's Medical Center. Accordingly, the patient and
their family can obtain expert opinions from the various
specialists with just one appointment.
The Sarcoma Service, at Huntsman Cancer Institute, in
addition to engaging in comprehensive clinical care, has
ongoing, state of the art, basic science studies
investigating the causes of sarcomas. We have a broad
range of research activities conducted by members of HCI
Sarcoma Service: from studying the manner in which these
unusual conditions are managed in the community, so as to
better facilitate their care; to state of the art
molecular genetic profiling of these tumors to be improve
our ability to diagnose, treat and cure sarcomas in the
future. Our patients have the opportunity to participate
in certain experimental investigations if they so desire.
All of our studies are sanctioned by an institutional
panel of experts that serves as patient advocate.
Information about these studies is readily available.
