You are not alone. Find strength in numbers. There are several support groups available at Huntsman Cancer Institute and in the Salt Lake City area for myeloma patients, their friends, and families.
The National Institute of Health along with the Institute of Medicine studied the psycho-social needs of cancer patients and how these needs are met. The evidence suggests that the psychological and social problems that are created or exacerbated by cancer can be effectively addressed through certain interventions, like a support group.
In addition to providing a social network with others facing similar challenges, support groups offer an environment where fears and anxieties can be openly discussed and expressed. Support groups also help myeloma patients improve communication with their doctors by learning to ask questions and being involved in decisions.
Myeloma/BMT Outpatient Support Group at Huntsman Cancer Institute
Blood/Marrow Transplant & Myeloma Support Group
Huntsman Cancer Hospital
1950 Circle of Hope
Salt Lake City, UT 84112
The group meets Wednesdays from noon to 1 p.m. in the chapel on the first floor of Huntsman Cancer Hospital. It is facilitated by our new patient coordinator, Debbie Coleman, and our licensed clinical social worker, Jennifer Vasquez.
The group is for both patients and caregivers. The meetings are fairly unstructured with the hope that participants will bring up whatever issues are on their mind. The facilitators are prepared to handle sensitive issues such as loss, guilt, family stressors, and life changes.
Myeloma/BMT Inpatient Caregiver Support and Education Group
While autologous stem cell transplants for multiple myeloma are done on an outpatient basis, it may be necessary at some point to stay at the hospital on an inpatient basis if a complication occurs that requires close monitoring.
Caregivers often have questions about how they can best assist their loved one during the hospital stay. This support group is designed to give caregivers a chance to talk about their questions and voice any concerns.
The group meets Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the BMT Inpatient Conference Room on the 5th floor of the University of Utah Hospital. Lunch is provided for those who attend, and caregivers are asked to bring their patient education binder to the meeting.
If you have questions about this group, you can contact facilitator Jennifer Hebdon-Seljestad, LCSW, at (801) 585-1845.
