In advance of your first visit to Huntsman Cancer Institute, your health insurance information is gathered by our new patient coordinator. This way you will know what to expect in terms of your coverage before you get here.
Our new patient coordinator will also send you a packet about the Myeloma Program containing information on:
- Huntsman Cancer Institute, including a map
- Our doctors
- The initial testing process
- Specifics on tests you will undergo
- Lodging information for those who do not live in the SLC area
If you have any medical records, scans, or lab results, we ask that you fax those to: 801-585-1296
What you will need to bring to your first visit:
- A completed patient personal history form (the form will be sent to you but can also be downloaded here)
- Your insurance card
- A list of current medications
- Emergency contact information
- Any advanced directives
We ask that you leave room in your suitcase to be sent home with monthly blood mailing kits.
If you have any questions, our new patient coordinator can help.
When you arrive at the clinic, you will go through initial testing, which will take two days. Then there will be one day of waiting for the results. During the two-day testing period, you will also meet with a social worker who can help ensure that your emotional, mental, and practical needs are met. And, if you wish, we can schedule a face-to-face meeting with a financial coordinator who can answer any remaining questions you may have about your health insurance coverage.
After the testing is done and the results are in, you will have a clinic visit with your doctor. Our doctors pledge to spend anywhere from one and a half to two hours with a new patient answering questions and discussing a recommended treatment plan. Together, you will decide on the next steps in the treatment process. Depending on the outcome of the tests, it is possible that the doctor will ask you to undergo a few more tests to get as much information about your kind of myeloma as possible.
A first-time visit to the Myeloma Program at HCI truly serves as a comprehensive evaluation of your disease. It can be a lot to take in, and we are dedicated to being there for you every step of the way. We encourage you to ask us questions and tell us about your concerns. Armed with the proper knowledge, you will become an effective part of your own myeloma treatment team.
