Meg Brady - YourStory Program

Margaret K. (Meg) Brady is the founding Director of YourStory: Record and Remember, a project to record the life stories of all Utahns, especially those with cancer. She is also Professor Emeritus of English and Ethnic Studies at the University of Utah, where she has taught courses in American Indian Studies, oral history, and folklore for over 30 years and has been honored with several prestigious teaching awards.

MaryAnn Lee - Step Into Life (new modern and creative dance class)

MaryAnn Lee is the director of the Tanner Creative Dance Program and Children's Dance Theatre in the College of Fine Arts at the University of Utah, where she is also an Adjunct Associate Professor the Department of Modern Dance. She trained with Virginia Tanner and was a member of Children's Dance Theatre. She received master's degrees in dance and French from Mills College and the University of Cincinnati, respectively. She performed professionally with the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company and Moveable Feast Dance Company in San Francisco and with the Contemporary Dance Theatre in Ohio. Ms. Lee was a dance specialist for the National Endowment for the Arts' Artists-in-Schools program and taught throughout the United States. She has been an invited guest teacher in China, Japan, The Netherlands, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, England, Finland, Canada, and Brazil. Ms. Lee continues to teach at the University of Utah in the Departments of Modern Dance and Education and in the Tanner Dance Program. She teaches throughout Utah, nationally, and internationally. This year Ms. Lee and Tanner Dance received the Governor's Award in the Arts.

Jorge Rojas – Artist in Residence Program

Jorge Rojas is an artist, curator, and art educator. He studied art at the University of Utah and at Bellas Artes-El Nigromante in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Rojas uses both traditional and new media, as well as performance, to explore the creation and processes involved in artistic production.

He has taught mural painting and other art-related workshops throughout the New York City public school system and has lead several art-related workshops in Salt Lake City. His work and curatorial projects have been exhibited internationally in galleries and museums, including Queens Museum of Art, New York; El Museo del Barrio, New York; New World Museum, Houston; Ex Convento del Carmen, Guadalajara; Museum of Latin American Art, Long Beach; Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Salt Lake City; and Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, Salt Lake City.

Grace Gough - Clinical Dietitian

Grace works as the outpatient dietitian at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI). She is responsible for the nutrition assessment and education of patients. In addition, Grace works with the needs of cancer survivors participating in the fitness program who have specific nutrition goals for weight loss or weight gain and improving overall physical capacity. Grace earned a master's degree from the University of Utah (U of U) in nutrition and dietetics and an undergraduate degree from the U of U in Exercise and Sport Science with a nutrition minor. Before coming to HCI, she worked at the U of U Hospital as a covering dietitian for all floors and units, giving her diverse experience. Grace has a passion for research and spent years working in neonatal nutrition research as a graduate research assistant and in iron transport in the Department of Pathology. She loves working in oncology and recognizes the importance of good nutrition throughout cancer treatment. Grace loves the outdoors and is an avid runner, golfer, hiker, and skier.

Pamela Hansen, MD -  Excercise Therapy Program Medical Director

Dr. Pamela A. Hansen is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine, specializing in musculoskeletal sports and spine rehabilitation. Dr. Hansen's clinical interests include rehabilitation of musculoskeletal problems, interventional spine procedures, and electrodiagnostic testing. Special interests include management of running injuries and cancer rehabilitation. She currently serves as the PM&R Residency Program Director.

Nicole Harmony - Rowing Instructor

Nicole started rowing in 1992 as a walk on to the Rutgers University Rowing team. She immediately fell in love with the sport and after a four year career as a Division I, 2 time MVP and captain, she moved to Boston to pursue coaching high school students at Buckingham Browne & Nichols School in Cambridge, MA. After two back to back National Championships, Nicole transitioned to coaching adults at Community Rowing in Boston, MA. In 2004, she moved to Utah and started the Huntsman Cancer Institute Rowing program. She loves sharing the sport of rowing. Nicole currently teaches Health, Yoga and oversees the Outdoor Adventure Program at Paradigm High School in South Jordan.

Anita Keetch, PRN - Exercise Specialist

Anita Keetch earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Utah in Exercise Science/Athletic Training and a master's degree in Sports Medicine from Brigham Young University. She is a National Athletic Trainer Association Certified Athletic Trainer and has been treating athletic injuries in youth, teens and adults for 25 years. In 2005 Anita certified as a Cancer Exercise Specialist and served as the Exercise Therapy Program Coordinator from 2005-2008. Her love of helping other people improve their lives through fitness lead her to become a National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and start her own fitness boot camp business, offering camps to team sports and adults. Anita currently serves at the Athletic Trainer for Rowland Hall High School and works as a Cancer Exercise Specialist for the Exercise Therapy Program. She loves helping cancer patients overcome the side effects of cancer and it's treatment and regain their health through proper exercise and nutrition.

Candace Larson - Zumba volunteer

Candace Larson is a volunteer Zumba instructor for Huntsman Cancer Institute. She first tried Zumba December of 2010 and became a certified Zumba instructor in June 2011. Candace is an employee of the Clinical Trials Office at Huntsman Cancer Institute. She is currently teaching Zumba on Thursday evenings (5:15-6:15PM) in the 6th floor multi-purpose room. This class is open to patients, family members, and staff. Join the Party!

Patrick Troumbley – Exercise Therapy Program Coordinator

Patrick is the Exercise Therapy Program Coordinator for the Linda B. and Robert B. Wiggins Wellness-Survivorship Center at Huntsman Cancer Institute.
Patrick has a master's degree in Exercise Science and Human Movement as well as bachelor's degrees in Parks and Recreation Administration and Spanish. He is certified as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association as well as a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer. Patrick is currently pursuing a PhD in Rehabilitation Science with the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Utah.

Patrick enjoys designing exercise programs that emphasize functional movements, with the aim to help people return to the activities they enjoy. He has volunteered with the Huntsman Cancer Foundation Hometown Heroes as a participant and coach for several years.

Darren has been a volunteer for the Exercise Therapy Program since 2006 while fulfilling an internship for the program and earning a Bachelors' degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Utah. He participates year-round in assisting with program's events and enjoys all the program's activities; cycling the Huntsman 140, snowshoeing, running with Hometown Heroes, and hiking being among the most memorable.

As a Certified Personal Trainer, he enjoys providing care and helping people stay active no matter what life has in store. When not volunteering with the Exercise Therapy Program, Darren works in HCI's Clinical Trials Office as a Certified Clinical Research Coordinator. One day he dreams of completing his first Iron Man Triathlon.

Kimberly Walker – Cancer Exercise Specialist

Kim Walker is a Cancer Exercise Specialist with the Exercise Therapy Program. She has been involved in building and developing the Fitness Program over the years and is bilingual in Spanish and English.  She works with outpatient HCI survivors administering exercise testing, prescription, and one on one exercise training. She teaches Resistance Training, Core, Zumba and Group Circuit classes and is part of the HCI Community Fitness Program’s including snowshoeing, hiking and biking. Kim is supportive in cancer and exercise research and is involved in advocating for the Hometown Heroes Program as a fundraiser and trainer for HCI survivors.

Kim is a Clinical Instructor at the University of Utah College of Health, Department of Exercise and Sports Science where she developed and currently teaches the Fitness Instructor Training Course. Kim is certified as a Health Fitness Specialist by the American College of Sports Medicine, and as a Cancer Exercise Trainer by the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Cancer Society. Kim is certified as a Group Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer by the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. She is a Level 11 Certified Zumba Instructor, Certified Spinning Instructor. She is certified in CPR and AED by the American Heart Association.

Cassandra Winner – Volunteer

Cassandra Winner is currently volunteering with the Exercise Therapy Program. She is developing her skills at the University of Utah in the Exercise and Sports Science Undergraduate Program. Cassandra is an avid snowboarder, mountain biker, rock climber, and backpacker. She enjoys yoga, running, reading philosophy, and painting in her free time. She is certified in WFR and CPR. She also has previously volunteered with The Youth Homeless Shelter, U-fit, and the Ironman-Wisconsin. She is currently teaching indoor cycling and circuit training at the University of Utah and looks forward to teaching other fitness classes in the future.

Karan Estee - Yoga

Karan has been teaching yoga for over ten years at various spots around the valley. She teaches regularly at the Jewish Community Center (www.slcjcc.org) and the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Karan has studied with many teachers including Peter Francyk, Dana Baptiste, Doug Swenson, Sienna Sherman, and Christy Burnette, to name a few. Her style of teaching is influenced by everything she has learned and adapts to suite her students. She received her 500 hour yoga training through Dana Baptiste in SLC and went on to receive another 200 hours of training specifically in yoga therapy. Karan also works as a trainer with individuals providing functional fitness and private yoga. An accomplished whitewater kayaker, Karan also teaches private kayak lessons. When not teaching, she likes to ski, mountain bike, and hike with her dog pack in the local hills.

Eric Garland

Eric Garland, PhD, LCSW, is associate director of integrative medicine in the Supportive Oncology and Survivorship Program at Huntsman Cancer Institute and an associate professor in the University of Utah College of Social Work. His main research interest is using neuroscience to find treatments for stress-related conditions.

Garland developed Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement (MORE), a treatment approach designed to improve understanding of what leads to stress-related conditions, addiction, emotional issues, and chronic pain. He received funding from the National Institutes of Health to conduct clinical trials of MORE.

Complementing his clinical research, Garland is a licensed clinical social worker with more than a decade of experience providing cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness-based therapies for people suffering from addictive behaviors, psychological distress, and chronic pain conditions.

Chris works with survivors and their families as well as Huntsman Cancer Institute faculty and staff as a yoga instructor in the Linda B. and Robert B. Wiggins Wellness-Survivorship Center.

Chris attends the University of Utah theatre department and enjoys bringing his theatrics to his yoga classes. Students especially appreciate his light-hearted "Laughter Yoga." Chris teaches on Monday nights with staff and faculty from 4:15-5:15 p.m. and then with survivors and family members from 5:30-6:30 p.m..

Paul Thielking, MD, PhD – Meditation, Guided Imagery

Paul Thielking, PhD, is a member of the Supportive Oncology and Survivorship team at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) and an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Utah. Thielking leads ongoing groups at HCI that teach patients meditation, relaxation, guided imagery, and other stress-reduction techniques.

Theilking completed medical school at the University of Iowa and his psychiatry residency training at the University of Utah. He is board-certified in both psychiatry and hospice and palliative medicine. He has a strong interest in integrating effective complementary and alternative healing practices with allopathic medicine. He is dedicated to teaching and regularly supervises medical students, psychiatry residents, and pain medicine fellows.

As medical director of Supportive Oncology and Survivorship, her goal is to broaden the spectrum of support available for cancer patients, and help them cope and confront their diagnosis. Jennifer Wright, MD - Pediatric Cancer Late Effects Clinic

At the Pediatric Cancer Late Effects Clinic, Wright sees patients who are long-term survivors of childhood cancer. She also focuses on treatment plans for young adult patients with sarcomas that are more commonly seen in children. Her research interests include medical and functional outcomes of pediatric cancer therapies, Ewing’s sarcoma therapy, and second malignancies in childhood cancer survivors. Jennifer is also a HCI investigator.

Shelley manages the Linda B. and Robert B. Wiggins Wellness-Survivorship Center. Prior to this position, she was manager of Patient and Family Support at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI). Before working in management, she provided patient and family support to blood and marrow transplant patients and family members. She continues to provide direct clinical care to patients and their loved ones by facilitating stress reduction and relaxation consultations through the Wellness-Survivorship Center.

Shelley earned a master's degree in social work from the University of Utah and has worked with cancer patients and their families for more than 15 years, including six years with hospice. In May 2005, she obtained her certification in contemplative end-of-life care from Naropa University. Before working in oncology, Shelley worked for eight years with people affected by domestic violence. She has more than 20 years of experience facilitating therapeutic groups, including grief and bereavement support groups and cancer survivor support groups.

Catherine Ricci – Executive Secretary

Cathy is the executive secretary for the Wellness-Survivorship Center. She works with patients to schedule appointments for Wellness-Survivorship services and provides administrative support. Cathy has served as administrative support for the Salt Lake Theological Seminary, was a secretary for Harvard Law School professors, and taught English as a Second Language to Yupik children in Alaska. She has spent several years doing volunteer work for schools, charities, and religious organizations. Cathy enjoys explaining Wellness-Survivorship services and finds HCI patients and staff members inspiring.

Carmina Lu – Intern

Carmina Lu is a graduate of Reed College and is currently a Master of Public Administration and Master of Healthcare Administration student at the University of Utah. Carmina's duties at the Wellness Center include research coordination, grant writing, and marketing. She also works as a project coordinator at the Center for Global Surgery in the School of Medicine. Her previous work experience includes working in Beijing for the Australian Embassy and Medicine Sans Frontières.

Jorge Rojas – Artist in Residence Program

Jorge Rojas is an artist, curator, and art educator. He studied art at the University of Utah and at Bellas Artes-El Nigromante in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Rojas uses both traditional and new media, as well as performance, to explore the creation and processes involved in artistic production.

He has taught mural painting and other art-related workshops throughout the New York City public school system and has lead several art-related workshops in Salt Lake City. His work and curatorial projects have been exhibited internationally in galleries and museums, including Queens Museum of Art, New York; El Museo del Barrio, New York; New World Museum, Houston; Ex Convento del Carmen, Guadalajara; Museum of Latin American Art, Long Beach; Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Salt Lake City; and Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, Salt Lake City.

Darren has been a volunteer for the HCI Wellness Center Fitness Program since 2006 while fulfilling an internship for HCI's Fitness program and earning a Bachelors' degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Utah. He participates year-round in assisting with HCI Fitness Program events and enjoys all types of fitness activities in the Wellness program; cycling the Huntsman 140, snowshoeing, running with Hometown Heroes, and hiking being among the most memorable.

As a Certified Personal Trainer, he enjoys providing care and helping people stay active no matter what life has in store. When not volunteering with the HCI fitness program, Darren works at The Huntsman Cancer Institute as a Certified Clinical Research Coordinator in the Clinical Trials Office. One day he dreams of completing his first Iron Man Triathlon.

Kimberly Walker – Cancer Exercise Specialist

Kim Walker is a Cancer Exercise Specialist with the Huntsman Cancer Institute, Fitness Program. She has been involved in building and developing the Fitness Program over the years and is bilingual in Spanish and English.  She works with outpatient HCI survivors administering exercise testing, prescription, and one on one exercise training. She teaches Resistance Training, Core, Zumba and Group Circuit classes and is part of the HCI Community Fitness Program’s including snowshoeing, hiking and biking. Kim is supportive in cancer and exercise research and is involved in advocating for the Hometown Heroes Program as a fundraiser and trainer for HCI survivors.

Kim is a Clinical Instructor at the University of Utah College of Health, Department of Exercise and Sports Science where she developed and currently teaches the Fitness Instructor Training Course. Kim is certified as a Health Fitness Specialist by the American College of Sports Medicine, and as a Cancer Exercise Trainer by the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Cancer Society. Kim is certified as a Group Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer by the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. She is a Level 11 Certified Zumba Instructor, Certified Spinning Instructor. She is certified in CPR and AED by the American Heart Association.

Cassandra Winner – Volunteer

Cassandra Winner is currently volunteering with the Fitness Program Team at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. She is developing her skills at the University of Utah in the Exercise and Sports Science Undergraduate Program. Cassandra is an avid snowboarder, mountain biker, rock climber, and backpacker. She enjoys yoga, running, reading philosophy, and painting in her free time. She is certified in WFR and CPR. She also has previously volunteered with The Youth Homeless Shelter, U-fit, and the Ironman-Wisconsin. She is currently teaching indoor cycling and circuit training at the University of Utah and looks forward to teaching other fitness classes in the future.

Jennifer Wright, MD - Pediatric Cancer Late Effects Clinic

At the Pediatric Cancer Late Effects Clinic, Wright sees patients who are long-term survivors of childhood cancer. She also focuses on treatment plans for young adult patients with sarcomas that are more commonly seen in children. Her research interests include medical and functional outcomes of pediatric cancer therapies, Ewing’s sarcoma therapy, and second malignancies in childhood cancer survivors. Jennifer is also a HCI investigator.
