Sean J. Mulvihill, MD

Sean Mulvihill, MD, is senior director of clinical affairs at Huntsman Cancer Institute and professor and chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He is a member of the Gastrointestinal Cancers Program. He holds the Ross Anderson, MD, Presidential Endowed Chair in Surgery.

Mulvihill’s research focuses on understanding the biology of pancreas cancer, with the goal of developing effective preventive and early detection strategies. His clinical expertise relates to diseases of the liver, pancreas, and bile ducts. He has worked to improve surgical outcomes and to develop novel treatment strategies for patients with pancreatic cancer and islet cell tumors. He is particularly interested in utilizing a multidisciplinary approach for cancer patients and is realizing this goal at Huntsman Cancer Institute. He currently serves as president of the American Hepatopancreatobiliary Association and on the executive council of the International Hepatopancreatobiliary Association.

Mulvihill edited a major surgical textbook, Surgery: Basic Science and Clinical Evidence, and has authored more than 130 scientific papers, editorials, and book chapters. He is also an editor and co-author of a leading text for patients with cancer, Everyone's Guide to Cancer Therapy.

Before moving to Utah in November 2000, Mulvihill was professor of surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, and chief of their general surgery division. He received his MD from the University of Southern California in 1981 and completed his clinical training at UCLA School of Medicine in 1987.
