John Sorensen, MD, is a professor of surgery and chief of the section of
transplantation in the Department of Surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He is the
primary liver transplant surgeon at Primary Children's Medical Center and a hepatobiliary surgeon
working with the Gastrointestinal Cancer Program at Huntsman Cancer Institute.
Sorensen's research efforts and publications focus on new immunosuppressant therapies,
immunological high-risk transplantation, and information technology. He is medical director of
Intermountain Donor Services, and a long-standing board member of the organization.
Sorensen received his medical degree from the Temple University School of Medicine in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed his general surgery residency with the Western Reserve Care
System, North Eastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, and a fellowship in transplantation
surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Sorensen is a lieutenant colonel in the U.S.
Army Reserve Medical Corps and has served two tours of overseas duty since 2001.
