This question and answer sheet was designed to help you understand your bill and financial responsibilities. If you have any questions, please contact one of the financial counselors listed below.

How many bills will I receive?

You will generally receive more than one bill. Each bill is for a different service and may include:

  • Bills from the hospital, and/or clinic(s) for facility, equipment, laboratory and/or radiology fees
  • Physician's bill(s) depending on how many physicians have been seen. For example, if you have seen an oncologist and a neurologist, you will receive separate bills for their services.
  • Bills from physicians that participated in your care but who you may not have seen during your visit. These would include the pathologists and radiologists who analyze your imaging or other tests and give results.

NOTE: Some insurance companies send a statement of services listing costs for services you received. This is NOT a bill. Your insurance company may pay for some of these costs. To find out if you need to pay, look for the words, “total due,” “amount due,” or “your responsibility.”

How do I identify each bill?

  • Hospital bill account numbers are eight numbers long with no letters.
  • Physician's bill account numbers start with the letter "M" followed by several numbers, a dash, and then two more numbers: i.e. M123456-78.

What if I have a question about my hospital bill?

If you have questions concerning your hospital bill, please contact one of the financial counselors.

What if I have a question about my physician's bill(s)?

Charges for services provided by your doctors, consulting physicians, or others involved in your treatment are billed directly by each physician. If you have questions regarding those bills, please contact each billing office directly. The phone number to call is listed on the top of the billing statement right above the M account number.

When will I receive my bills?

In most cases, you will receive your doctor bill(s) before your hospital bill(s). You should receive an initial hospital bill approximately 15 days after your visit. You should then receive a notification approximately every month, updating you on the progress of this financial obligation.

When do I pay my copayment and deductible?

Please pay your copayments and deductibles before or at the check-in time.

What if I do not have insurance or have difficulty paying my bill?

Contact one of our financial counselors to make financial arrangements. If you do not have insurance, you can pay a deposit of 50 percent of the estimated charges before or at the time of service. You will be asked to sign an agreement stating the amount you paid is only an estimate. The remaining balance is due within 30 days. You have the option to pay the remaining balance through a monthly payment plan. For those with extreme financial hardship, a sliding scale arrangement is available. Strict income guidelines apply. Contact a financial counselor to find out if you are eligible.

How can I make a payment?

Payments are accepted at each financial counselor's office.

We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover Card, as well as checks or cash; however, deposits over $10,000 must be presented in the form of a cashier's check from your bank or credit union, made payable to the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics.

We also accept payments by mail at the following address:
