Huntsman Cancer Institute is part of the University of Utah Health Sciences Centers of Excellence network. It serves thousands of cancer patients throughout the Intermountain West every year, and provides academic and clinical training for future physicians and researchers. It is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in the Intermountain West, and one of only 19 members of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, with worldwide recognition for its programs and research in colon cancer and melanoma, and genetics-focused research. Huntsman Cancer Hospital is the only cancer specialty hospital in the Intermountain West, and houses all cancer treatment and diagnostic services previously performed at University Hospital. In 2005, the leadership of Huntsman Cancer Institute and Intermountain Healthcare (Intermountain) announced a cancer research and education alliance to offer more hope to cancer patients. Through this effort, HCI and Intermountain will cooperate to conduct and review clinical trials. This allows both institutions to make more rapid progress toward identifying and implementing the best treatment practices. SelectHealth (the new name of IHC Health Plans) has added HCH physicians and facilities to its provider list. The organizations will continue to compete in the delivery of care and will provide clinical services independently.
