People undergoing cancer treatment may experience changes in normal sleep patterns for a number of reasons, including response to medications, discomfort, hospitalizations, emotional distress, and alteration in normal activity patterns.

Your goals

  • Prevent insomnia.
  • Call for professional help when needed.

  • Have not slept in days

What you can do at home

  • Gentle back rubs or massages may be relaxing for some patients.
  • Create a quiet environment in which to sleep by decreasing noise, dimming lights, adjusting room temperature, and keeping bedding and pillows clean, dry and wrinkle-free.
  • Try not to drink before bed. Empty bowel and bladder before retiring for the night.
  • Avoid drinks with caffeine before bed.
  • Minimize daytime naps.
  • Listen to relaxation tapes and or peaceful music before bed.
