KUBL, Glenn Beck listeners, and community give $555,000 through Radio-a-Thon to support cancer research at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI)
SALT LAKE CITY — The Huntsman Cancer Foundation (HCF) K-Bull 93 Radio-a-Thon closed on Saturday with a total of $555,000 raised for cancer research. KUBL listeners opened their wallets and donated more than $158,000 in just two days—Friday, January 29 through Saturday, January 30 to bolster the gifts from community partners who graciously donated the remainder through events and initiatives from the past year.
Talk radio’s Glenn Beck served as the Radio-a-Thon’s honorary chair and broadcasted an interview during his nationally-syndicated radio show with HCI’s principal benefactor, Jon M. Huntsman. Local KUBL on-air personalities Johnson and Johnson, Shotgun Jackson, The Outlaw Pat Garrett, Cornbread, and Coyote McCoy hosted the 36 hours of programming.
Survivors of the disease shared their stories of hope with radio listeners as tangible evidence that cancer research saves lives. “I hope I never have to tell my kids again that I have cancer,” said four-time cancer survivor and Radio-a-Thon volunteer, Linda Hill, “but if I do, I have faith in cancer research. We have faith in cancer research. And the answer to our hope and prayers is the Huntsman Cancer Institute and their dedication to finding a cure.”
The Radio-a-Thon campaign, in its eighth year, continued to fund hope, thanks to generous listeners. Organizers are encouraged by the event’s results. “Despite the tough economy, supporters came out in full force,” said Huntsman Cancer Foundation’s Event Manager Brooke Hathaway. “We are so grateful to all the survivors and volunteers who gave up their weekends to help raise funds to fight cancer and to the people who made gifts to continue the fight.”
