Training Program Requirements

Our rigorous cancer training program has several required key elements that help integrate trainees into the cancer research community. These elements create broad and deep exposure to modern cancer research, including both state-of-the-art science and areas in which better research is needed.

  • Two cancer-focused didactic courses (Molecular Biology of Cancer and Clinical Cancer Biology) sponsored by and developed for the MCRTP
    • 6500  Molecular Mechanisms of Cancer
This course was offered Spring of 2008 and will be offered again in Spring 2009.  The course reviews current understanding of the molecular and cellular biology of cancer and how this knowledge relates to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer.
    •  6510  Clinical Cancer Biology (1.5)  Instructor:  Scott Kuwada, MD
This course complements the Molecular Biology of Cancer course. It is designed for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in basic science and clinical departments with an interest in modern principles and practice of oncology. The course will focus on general principles and new developments in cancer etiology, detection, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. It addresses specific diseases, using advances in each area to highlight various principles.
  • Monthly attendance of one of Huntsman Cancer Institute’s clinical tumor boards, aided by a clinician-scientist guide
