Educating the next generation of cancer researchers and physicians is one of the goals at Huntsman Cancer Institute. Our training opportunities bring together students, faculty, and staff in an atmosphere of learning and collaboration between a wide range of research disciplines.
The Department of Oncological Sciences performs research and provides training with an emphasis in cancer biology. Our graduate program offers PhD degrees specializing in transcriptional regulation and epigenetics, animal models of gastrointestinal and breast cancers and cancer cell biology including signaling, apoptosis and metabolism.
Huntsman Cancer Institute is fully integrated into the larger scientific community of the University of Utah. To provide students with the largest number of laboratory choices, students are offered admission in one of two interdisciplinary programs, the Molecular Biology Program and the Biological Chemistry Program.
Summer interns are selected from a pool of candidates who are either currently enrolled at a university or college as a sophomore, junior, or senior, or recent graduates who have not begun graduate or medical studies. A strong commitment to biomedical research is a selection criteria.
The Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Fellowship program is structured to provide training for bright, highly motivated candidates seeking careers in academic medicine. The fellowship is at a minimum a three-year experience and provides broad training in clinical medicine, as well as a highly structured program in bench or clinical research.
First established in 2002, the Multidisciplinary Cancer Research Training Program (MCRTP) supports two predoctoral trainees for up to three years and seven postdoctoral trainees for two years after a productive review of the first year's progress. The MCRTP centers on cutting-edge cancer-focused research in one of 67 mentor's laboratories representing 17 departments.
The goal of the Genome Sciences Program (GS) is to train the next generation of investigators to integrate genomics with biological and clinical research. GS merges functional genomics and translational biology to investigate biological systems at all levels of complexity. The certificate program combines faculty from multiple departments to provide important opportunities for applied research and learning at the interface of computation and biology.
